Despite bad reviews my trip from Gili Air to Bali was smooth. I had bought the tickets online (it is not always clear if you are at the official page or not, especially during payment, but in the end I got a voucher by email). The office is maybe 100m from the harbour. They confirmed my reservation but didn't check any documents. You need to sign in on the passenger list yourself.
I carefully selected the right trip which started at Gili T and had minimal amount of stops before Bali. If you don't check it you may end up on a different one stopping also in the Nusa Penida. The boat came on time, left even earlier. We got to Bali also on time.
Because of the size of the boat it cannot get to the harbour and you use a small shuttle-catamaran platform to board. As the water was calm it was not a problem.
During the trip the sea was mostly calm, there were bigger waves between Nusa Penida and Bali but it is an open sea there. We were seating on the deck, it was windy but manageable. I don't know if smaller boat would be more comfortable.
I think there was and air condition inside.
