The USS Liberty Wreck was beached by the Americans after the Japanese torpedoed and nearly sunk her during World War II on January 11, 1942. In 1963 she met her fate when the giant Mt. Agung erupted pushing her about 30 metres off shore. The marine life on and around the wreck is fantastic. Generally there are no currents. This is a great dive site for experienced divers or beginners. Tulamben is also a great dive to get back into the swim of things if it has been a few months since your last dive. Visibility is generally 12-20 metres and water temperature is roughly warm 28 to 29 degrees C. The wreck stretches more than 100m on steeply sloping black sand. The top of the wreck is at a depth of 5m and the bottom at 29m during low tide. The hull is broken into large chunks with big holes, making it easy to explore the innards. Usually the first dive is a deep dive around this giant and the second explores the innards.
Beside the wreck, there are few point you can explore along the Tulamben beach. On the right if you facing the sea are Paradise reef, Droff off (wall), Alamanda, Batu Kelebit, Seraya (macro heaven), while on the left about 1km away or about 10 minutes by car, there is Kubu point. Rright off the beach, in 5-15 metres of water, there is a lovely reef with some beautiful Staghorn corals and schools of reef fish. This site is good for macro and also you can find and dive in another wreck beside the USS Liberty, the BOGA Wreck. This new wreck sunk about September 2012 with 150 tons weight and 85 meters length, located at the depth approximately 13 - 30 meters.

We came to Bali in April 2024 wanting to dive our first ship wreck the USS Liberty. This was our first shore dive as well. Our dive master Asa was amazing! We are newly certified divers and Asa made us feel comfortable and safe. We even forgot our GoPro but Asa brought one and captured incredible pictures and videos for us. He took us to a coffee farm and a temple after diving. We highly recommend Bali Marine Divers! They are the absolute best. We will be using them the next time we come to Bali.
